Mehrnaz Rohbakhsh is an interdisciplinary artist based in Toronto, who focuses on visual art and sound. She has exhibited her work in Canada, the US, Italy, and Japan. She is currently pursuing a Master of Visual Studies at the University of Toronto.
As an interdisciplinary artist, my practice consists of studying the connections between music and astronomy, using drawing as a tool to understand the mathematical concepts that underlies them. I articulate my findings in linear, intricate drawings, applying practices in cartography such as musical notation and astronomical maps to create comparisons.
These drawings are preceded by translating mathematical equations into sound. I translate these graphs into musical ones through various means such as data visualization and chance operations, in addition to collecting field recordings from different geographical sites around the world. This data is then converted into musical works through digital audio programs.
